This piece merges sacred domesticity with handcrafted modernity — perfect for boutique bedrooms, mindful retreats, or anyone seeking beauty in the balance between form and feeling.

Forest Frame

The skeleton and outer structure of the wardrobe are carved from high-quality, rich-grained solid wood. Showcasing deep amber tones and visible natural knots, the framing anchors the entire unit, providing an enduring foundation that highlights the strength and authenticity of raw timber.

Bamboo Echo Panels (Loft Storage)

Maximizing vertical space, the upper cabinets feature precision-milled fluted woodwork that echoes the rhythmic, linear patterns of bamboo forests. These slatted panels add dynamic texture to the top tier, drawing the eye upward and offering a sophisticated tactile contrast to the smooth wood frames.

Whisper Panels (Main Doors)

The centerpiece of the Vanamala Wardrobe lies in its elegantly inset main door panels. Breaking away from heavy wood expanses, these panels feature a breathable, cream-toned textile inlay adorned with delicate, earth-toned block prints of botanical motifs. The fabric softens the overall aesthetic, bringing a calm, “whispering” softness to your bedroom environment.

Rooted Base

Echoing the design of the loft storage, the lower sections of the main doors integrate matching fluted wooden undersides. This grounds the visual weight of the wardrobe, balancing the textile midsection and providing a cohesive, balanced silhouette from floor to ceiling.

Thread Pulls & Hardware

Completing the piece are minimalist, elongated brass bar handles and square knobs. Sleek, thin, and functional, these metallic elements slice clean lines through the organic textures, adding a touch of contemporary luxury. The inclusion of discrete, secure locking mechanisms ensures your personal items are protected without disrupting the visual flow.

Craftsmanship

The Vanamala Wardrobe is a celebration of artisanal mastery. Every joint is meticulously aligned to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of solid wood, ensuring longevity across generations.

By marrying the strict structure of linear fluting with the soft elegance of botanical textiles, our craftsmen have created a piece that feels both grounded and weightless. It is more than just a closet—it is an indoor sanctuary designed to bring the grounding peace of the woods into your daily ritual.

The defining characteristic of this piece is its breathtaking artisanal woodwork. The upper sections feature exquisite, hand-chiseled wooden carvings. The close-up reveals a classical sculptural figure resting upon a stylized lotus plinth, functioning as a decorative bracket supporting the upper canopy. This level of intricate detailing highlights a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, bringing a museum-quality artistic element directly into the home environment.

Custom Mini Pillars and Paneled Canopy

Framing the flush, paneled front doors are elegantly turned, custom mini pillars that run vertically along the edges of the piece. These pillars transition smoothly from the figural carvings at the top down to classic spindle-turned bases, terminating in sturdy bun feet. Crowning the wardrobe is a commanding paneled canopy. This protruding cornice features a continuous, heavily carved frieze that adds substantial visual weight and architectural depth to the upper profile.

Craftmanship

Constructed from premium solid Teak wood, the wardrobe ensures extraordinary durability and longevity. The natural strength of the teak is enhanced by a deep, dark mahogany-toned polish that brings out the subtle, straight grains of the wood. This rich finish not only protects the timber but also imparts a deep, lustrous warmth that responds beautifully to ambient room lighting, ensuring the piece ages gracefully over time.

The Vaaga Armoire Wooden Wardrobe is more than just a piece of storage—it is a curated ritual of dressing, deeply rooted in the slow rhythm of tropical mornings and the timeless elegance of Kerala homes. The name Vaaga is drawn from the Malayalam word “vaaykkal” (വായ്‌ക്കൽ), meaning breeze passage or vent. True to its name, this wardrobe speaks of breathability, rhythm, and natural flow, making it a statement piece for boutique resorts, heritage bedrooms, or transitional contemporary interiors.

Crafted from richly grained timber and elevated beautifully on slender legs, the Vaaga Armoire seamlessly balances cultural grace with thoughtful, modern functionality.

1. Gopura Crown (Tall Frame Top Loft)

The uppermost structure features a tall, open wooden frame that serves as an integrated top loft. Echoing the iconic tiered architecture of Kerala’s temple gopurams and the high attic lofts of ancestral homes, this open-air crown provides a visually light yet spacious zone for storage or decorative display.

2. Vaaga Panels (Three Slatted Doors)

The heart of the armoire consists of three elegantly hand-slatted louvered shutters. Inspired by the chaarupadi windows of traditional nalukettu homes, these vents are engineered to allow the wardrobe to breathe, naturally circulating air to keep garments fresh while beautifully filtering incoming light.

3. Nila Knobs (Brass Pull Handles)

Punctuating the rich wood tones are square brass pull handles. The design mirrors temple geometry and simple colonial hardware. The brass glints gently against the deep timber grain, evoking the subtle imagery of moonlight reflecting on polished wood.

4. Kavi Drawers (Bottom Drawer Units)

Located at the base of the shutter units are low-slung, spacious drawers. Intended as a dedicated safe space for tucked-away treasures, heirlooms, or daily essentials, these drawers offer deep, sturdy storage with a smooth glide.

5. Pada Stands (Tapered Base Legs)

The armoire is anchored by tapered base legs that strike a perfect balance between sturdiness and visual grace. By lifting the heavy wooden structure off the floor, these legs introduce an element of lightness, stability, and clean, mid-century modern airiness to the overall silhouette.

Craftsmanship

Every joint, shutter slat, and brass fixture on the Vaaga Armoire is a testament to meticulous woodcraft, celebrating historical Indian furniture forms like traditional thadi petti (wooden storage chests) and visari almaris. Rather than overwhelming a space, its architectural frame works with the surrounding air and light, bringing a sense of nostalgia, modern utility, and profound identity to your interior.

Surya Almirah – Cabinet Wardrobe

The Surya Almirah takes its name from Surya, the solar deity whose image has been carved into Indian stone and wood for over two thousand years. This six-door wardrobe is built in solid hardwood, hand-carved by Heritage craftsmen and scaled to fill a room with genuine presence.

The post Surya Almirah – Cabinet Wardrobe appeared first on Heritage Art & Architecture.

The piece is large by design. At roughly ten feet wide and eight and a half feet tall, it was made for a space that can hold it — a master bedroom, a dressing room, a heritage residence. The carving runs across every surface: the drawer fronts above, the full-height doors, the lower cabinet panels. None of it is applied or decorative in the superficial sense. It is structural to the piece, integral to what it is.

The Carving

The central motif on each door is the Surya Chakra — a radial sun wheel with fine fluted rays carved outward from a raised central boss. The same wheel appears as a circular roundel on each of the six upper drawer fronts, and as an oval medallion at the centre of every main door panel. The repetition is deliberate; it gives the piece its visual coherence across nearly eleven feet of width.

Above each sun medallion, a foliate arrangement is carved in high relief — acanthus leaves and tropical botanical forms, deeply undercut and asymmetric in the way that handwork produces. This kind of carving appears in both Mughal decorative tradition and in the woodwork of South Indian temples and palaces. On the Surya Almirah, the two influences sit together naturally.

The panel architecture itself follows the Indo-colonial furniture tradition: each door is divided into three zones by stepped moulding borders, giving the piece a structured geometry that holds the carving in place without competing with it.

Brass bar handles run vertically along each door. The hardware is long, plain, and warm in tone — the right counterpoint to surfaces this detailed.

Craft & Making

The technique used on the Surya Almirah is entirely hand-tool work: chisels and gouges, no machine routing. Up close, no two panels are carved identically. The variation is the point. The lacquer finish is built up in multiple coats, hand-rubbed between each layer to draw out the grain and protect the carved surface without flattening it.

Inspired by the stained-glass verandahs of old Kerala-Portuguese bungalows and the arched sanctums of temple mandapas, this dresser is designed to make every self-reflection sacred. The dark polished frame is accented by hand-cut stained glass in hues of emerald, amber, and sapphire—symbolizing prosperity, vitality, and clarity.

The arched crown design gives it a church-window elegance, while the twin drawers and sturdy seating ledge recall the ara petti (heritage storage chests) found in aristocratic homes. Whether placed in a colonial villa, a heritage hotel, or a New York apartment, this dresser becomes a daily ritual altar, blending utility with ornamental prestige.

Hand-hewn from kiln-seasoned rosewood, each board on this three-door armoire is finished with natural oils that let the grain glow like Kerala’s evening sun. The crown moulding borrows its sweep from temple gopuram roofs, while the gently scalloped plinth echoes the rhythm of a Kathakali ankle-bell. Brass pulls and a timeless mortice lock add a colonial whisper, honouring the era when Malabar teak sailed to world capitals.
