The same wood, the same joinery, the same finish, and yet within a year the drawers in Delhi stick in July and rattle loose by February. Nobody warned the buyer that furniture has a relationship with the room it sits in, and that relationship changes with the season.

Indian weather asks more of wood than most climates do. A single year can carry four months of monsoon humidity, a dry, dust-heavy summer, and a winter where indoor heating or air conditioning strips moisture out of the air. Wood, being a hygroscopic material, absorbs and releases moisture constantly in response. Understanding that one fact solves most of the mysteries around cracking, warping, and pest damage.

The Science: Why Wood Moves

Wood is made of cellulose fibres bundled into cell walls, and those cell walls hold water. When humidity rises, the fibres absorb moisture and swell. When the air turns dry, the fibres release moisture and shrink. This movement happens mostly across the grain, not along its length, which is why a tabletop can widen or narrow by a few millimetres over a season while the legs barely change.

This is not a defect. It is how wood behaves as a living material even after it has been cut and seasoned. A door that swings freely in December and drags against its frame in August is simply responding to a moisture content that has climbed from around 8-10% in dry weather to 16-18% during peak monsoon in many parts of India. Furniture makers account for this by leaving small expansion gaps in panel construction and by choosing joinery, like mortise and tenon, that allows some natural movement without pulling the piece apart.

Problems start when the wood was never properly seasoned to begin with. Kiln-dried or well air-dried timber has already released most of its internal moisture in a controlled way, so its later swelling and shrinking stays within a predictable, manageable range. Timber that was cut and sold green will keep adjusting for years, and that is when cracks, gaps, and warped panels show up regardless of how good the finish looks.

Humidity and the Monsoon Problem

Coastal cities carry the heaviest load. In Kochi, Chennai, or Mumbai, indoor humidity during monsoon months regularly sits above 80%. A wardrobe pushed flush against an exterior wall in such condition’s traps moisture between the wall and the wood, and over a few seasons that surface can develop a faint musty smell or a soft, slightly spongy feel before any visible damage appears.

A few adjustments reduce this risk considerably:

  • Leave 3-4 inches of clearance between large furniture and exterior walls, especially walls that face the monsoon wind.
  • Run a dehumidifier or the room’s AC in dry mode during the wettest months if the room is closed for long stretches.
  • Wipe down surfaces with a dry cloth after monsoon spells rather than leaving condensation to sit.
  • Avoid plastic or rubber-backed mats directly on wooden surfaces, since they seal in moisture instead of letting it evaporate.

Unpredictable summers add a second layer to this. A hot, dry May followed by an early, heavy monsoon puts wood through rapid expansion after rapid contraction, and it’s this back-and-forth cycling, more than any single extreme, that eventually causes joints to loosen and veneers to lift at the edges.

Pest Control: What Actually Attacks Wooden Furniture

Two pests account for most of the damage seen in Indian homes: subterranean termites and wood-boring beetles (often called powder post beetles, based on the fine dust they leave behind).

Termites usually travel up from soil contact through walls or foundations, which is why furniture kept directly on the floor near an exterior wall or a garden-facing room is at higher risk than furniture with proper legs and clearance. Wood-boring beetles are different. They lay eggs in the wood itself, often in furniture that already had some moisture content or sapwood present at the time of purchase, and the damage only becomes visible months later when small exit holes and fine powder start appearing.

Practical pest control measures worth building into a maintenance routine:

  1. Inspect furniture legs and the undersides of cabinets every few months for small holes, mud tunnels, or powder residue.
  2. Use a wood preservative or borate-based treatment on new furniture, particularly on unfinished or unseen surfaces like the back panel and underside.
  3. Keep firewood, cardboard, and old wooden crates away from the house, since termite colonies often start there before moving indoors.
  4. Call a licensed pest control service for a preventive termite treatment every one to two years in high-risk, high-humidity regions, rather than waiting for visible damage.
  5. Avoid placing wooden furniture directly against damp walls or on bare, unsealed flooring, since both conditions attract termites looking for a moisture source.

Which Woods Hold Up Best Against Pests

Not all timber is equally vulnerable. Natural oils and density play a large role in resistance.

Teak remains the benchmark. Its natural oil content repels moisture and deters both termites and beetles, which is why teak furniture from South Indian workshops has a long documented history of surviving generations of coastal humidity with minimal pest damage.

Sheesham comes next, dense and naturally resistant, commonly used across North Indian furniture for exactly this reason, though it benefits from a protective finish since its resistance is good but not as high as teak’s. Sheesham is botanically Dalbergia sissoo, and it’s worth separating from true Indian rosewood, since the two get mixed up constantly in furniture showrooms.

Beeti, or Dalbergia latifolia, is the wood actually classified as Indian rosewood, and it deserves its own section given how often it’s sold under the sheesham label. Native to the Western Ghats and the dry deciduous forests of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, Beeti heartwood carries a dark purplish-brown colour with black streaking, a rose-like fragrance when worked, and a density close to 850 kg per cubic metre, notably heavier than sheesham. That density is what gives it a Janka hardness rating well above teak, making it one of the hardest cabinet woods available in India.

Beeti’s heartwood is rated very durable against dry-wood termites and decay fungi, largely due to its high natural oil and extractive content, though Indian field studies note its termite resistance runs moderate rather than absolute, so it still benefits from standard preventive treatment. The sapwood is a different story: it’s pale, thin, and genuinely vulnerable to powder-post beetles, which is why furniture makers trim sapwood away from the usable heartwood wherever possible. Because the tree grows slowly and takes several decades to mature, Beeti is protected under Indian forestry regulation and commands a premium price closer to teak than to sheesham. It’s traditionally used for high-end cabinetry, carved furniture, and decorative veneers rather than everyday pieces, and a genuine Beeti dining table or armoire is usually a multi-generational purchase rather than a five-year one.

Sal wood performs well too, particularly in structural and heavier furniture pieces, thanks to its density and natural resin content.

Softer, cheaper woods like mango wood or rubberwood are far more vulnerable unless heavily treated, and plywood or MDF with poor quality core material can be the most vulnerable of all, since factory-grade adhesives don’t offer the same resistance that solid, oil-rich timber does naturally.

Matching Wood to Region: North vs South India

Climate should influence timber choice as much as budget or aesthetics do.

North Indian homes deal with a wide temperature and humidity swing across the year: dry, dusty summers, a shorter but intense monsoon, and cold, dry winters, often made drier still by indoor heating. Sheesham suits this range well because it holds its shape reasonably across dry-to-humid cycling and is widely available from local workshops in states like Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Teak also performs well here, and in drier northern regions it actually has an easier time than it does on the coast, since there’s less sustained humidity pressure to manage.

South Indian homes, especially in Kerala, coastal Tamil Nadu, and coastal Karnataka, face sustained high humidity for a much larger part of the year. Teak is the traditional and still the most reliable choice, which is exactly why it has been the dominant furniture wood in Kerala’s carpentry traditions for centuries. Beeti is a natural fit here too, since the tree itself grows in the Western Ghats and has evolved alongside this exact climate, giving it the dimensional stability that heirloom South Indian cabinetry is known for. Sal also does reasonably well, but softer woods, and even sheesham without adequate sealing, tend to swell and warp faster in this climate than they would further north.

Polishing and Maintenance Frequency

A finish is not decoration. It is the wood’s first line of defence against moisture and pests, and it needs renewal on a schedule rather than only when it starts looking dull.

  • Dusting: daily to a few times a week with a soft, dry cloth, since dust holds moisture and can scratch the surface finish over time.
  • Deep cleaning: once a month with a wood-safe cleaner, avoiding water-based cleaners that can seep into joints.
  • Polishing or waxing: every 3-6 months for furniture in humid regions, and closer to once every 6-9 months in drier northern climates, since drier air puts less strain on the protective coat.
  • Re-varnishing or re-lacquering: every 3-5 years depending on usage and exposure to sunlight or moisture, or sooner if the finish shows visible cracking, peeling, or a chalky texture.
  • Professional inspection: once a year for pest activity and joint integrity, particularly for older or antique pieces where structural wear is harder to spot without experience.
