Madras Parlour Settee & Armchair Set

This is a 3-piece seating suite in the Anglo-Indian parlour tradition — a double-seat settee paired with a high-back single armchair, both sharing the same frame and upholstery language. The silhouette is firmly colonial-era: cabriole legs with scroll feet, an arched back rail, and exposed ebonised rosewood framing with a deep lacquer finish. The posture is upright and architectural.

Description

The primary fabric is a hand-block printed cotton in the Bagru handblock design tradition — cream ground, densely worked with stylised florals, birds, and vine motifs in coral red, saffron, dusty teal, and ochre. Red cotton piping runs along every seam. The bolster cushions in solid cobalt, ruby, and emerald are likely velvet or a smooth woven cotton, chosen to contrast against the busy printed base.

Design Inspiration

The set sits at the intersection of European frame construction and Indian textile craft. The wider room reinforces this — a Rajasthani dhurrie underfoot, brass collectibles on a marble-top gueridon table, a large expressionist painting behind.

Colour Palette

Cream base, ruby red, cobalt, emerald, ochre/saffron, dusty teal, and deep ebony wood. The cream ground keeps the set from reading heavy; the jewel cushions supply the drama.
